Community Education Programs


The Department of Education is committed to increasing the community's level of HIV/AIDS knowledge and awareness through innovative interventions and targeted outreach.The department provides an array of individual- and group-level programs and services, reaching thousands of Alabamians through outreach at various venues including: local colleges and universities, faith-based organizations, shelters, correctional faciliteis, and more.

 

Beauty in Knowing

Beauty in Knowing is one of AIDS Alabama's innovative prevention education programs that targets African-American woman between the ages of 18 and 45 who are studying at local cosmetology schools in Birmingham and Jefferson County. The program is comprised of five ninety-minute sessions addressing issues including: stigma related to HIV and HIV infection; self-esteem; male-to-female sex ratio; povery; and condum use negotiation skils, which contribute to the spread of HIV/AIDS amoung urban, low-income African-American women residing in Birmingham and Jefferson County. Birmingham Many Men, Many Voices (3MV)

Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Many Men, Many Voices (3MV) is a seven session, group level intervention to prevent HIV and sexually transmitted infections among Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) of color ages 13-29 who may or may not identify themselves as gay. The intervention addresses factors that influence the behavior of MSM of color: cultural, social, and religious norms; interactions between HIV and other sexually transmitted infections; sexual relationship dynamics; and the social influences that racism and homophobia have on HIV risk behaviors. HIV Vaccine Awareness

Right now, there is no vaccine to prevent HIV infection. But scientists are working to find one. To succeed, they will need people from all walks of life to support HIV vaccine studies and encourage those who volunteer. Learn more about how you can make a difference. Together we can be the generation that ends the AIDS epidemic.
