Ongoing Education & Outreach

Our Newest Weapon Against HIV

Mobile Testing UnitThe "BRATmobile" (Birmingham Rapid AIDS Testing) mobile testing unit is AIDS Alabama's newest weapon in the fight against HIV.   Thanks to the support of Gilead Sciences, our message of HIV/AIDS prevention education is now truly "mobile." The BRATmobile is the only mobile testing unit of its kind in the Southeast, and is currently used for outreach in high risk communities and for community awareness events throughout the state. AIDS Alabama provides free, confidential HIV testing, and both the Oraquick, rapid 20 minute test, and the Orasure oral test are offered through the BRATmobile.

Beauty N Knowing

Beauty N Knowing is a new project that pairs HIV/AIDS awareness/informational sessions with focus groups centered on the HIV/AIDS epidemic among urban African-American women.  Beauty N Knowing sessions will be held at beauty salons throughout Jefferson County, and refreshments, beauty supply samples and safe sex kits will be provided at each event.  Participants will receive an introduction to HIV prevention information, and will also learn more about the HIV/AIDS epidemic's effects on African-Americans throughout the United States.  Sessions are scheduled to be held at local beauty salons on Monday evenings from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.  If you are interested in participating in a Beauty N Knowing session, or would like to learn more about hosting a session, please contact Reashanda White at Reashanda@aidsalabama.org.

AIDS Vaccine in Development

www.bethegeneration.org

Work is currently being conducted to develop an effective HIV vaccine. The vaccine research trial is a clinical trial to determine the effectiveness of a vaccine to protect against the spread of HIV. Participation in the research trial will allow scientists to realize the effectiveness of proposed vaccine. Your participation in the trial will help in the fight against HIV/AIDS. You can't get HIV from the vaccine study, but you can help end the AIDS epidemic. www.bethegeneration.org
