HIV Statistics

General Stats

  • More than 14,000 people in Alabama  have been infected with HIV disease (those are the ones we know about and doesn't count those who have never been tested or were tested in another state)
  • Thirty percent of these people live in the Birmingham area
  • It is estimated that another 711 people will become infected in the state in the next year
  • Half of the new infections will be in people under the age of 25
  • Almost a third of the new infections will be among women or child-bearing age
  • 4,286 reported cases of HIV/AIDS in Jefferson County (as of 4/26/07)

  • Served 742 clients
  • Provided 48,879 nights of safe housing
  • Provided 11,524 consumer trips through our transportation dept
  • Tested 611 persons for HIV
  • Provided HIV Prevention materials and education to over 12,000 people
  • Provided 2,824 nights of housing to individual receiving substance abuse treatment at our Rectory program
  • Distributed 1,096 rental assistance checks
  • Provided a total of $366,134 in financial assistance to persons living with HIV/AIDS
