General Stats
- More than 15,000 people in Alabama have been infected with HIV disease. These are only those we know about and doesn't count persons who have never been tested or were tested in another state. The Centers for Disease Control and Treatment estimates that 25% of all HIV-positive persons have not been tested and do not know they are living with HIV.
- Almost one-third of HIV-positive Alabamians live in Jefferson County.
- It is estimated that over 900 people will become infected in the state in the next year.
- Almost two-thirds of the new infections will be among African-Americans.
- Twenty-five percent of the new infections will be among women.
- There were 4,465 reported cases of HIV/AIDS in Jefferson County (as of 6/30/08)
