About

Dr. LaToya D. Melton, DSW, LMSW is an Assistant Professor of Field Education and BSSW Field Practicum Coordinator in the Department of Social Work at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). With nearly 20 years of professional social work experience, she has dedicated her career to advancing education, advocacy, community engagement, and the well-being of individuals and families across Alabama.

Dr. Melton earned her Doctor of Social Work (DSW) degree in May 2026. Her scholarly interests focus on youth athlete mental health, mental health literacy, trauma-informed care, and the role of social work in promoting resilience and well-being among diverse populations.

A passionate advocate for community service, Dr. Melton's relationship with AIDS Alabama spans more than two decades. She began her service with the organization as a Master of Social Work student intern in 2003 and was hired in 2005 as a Rural Outreach Educator shortly before graduating. Her commitment to the agency's mission continued through volunteer leadership, becoming a member of the Board of Directors in 2012. Today, she serves as Board Chair/President, providing strategic leadership and governance to support the organization's efforts in HIV prevention, education, advocacy, and care throughout Alabama.

Throughout her career, Dr. Melton has worked in a variety of settings, including community-based organizations, healthcare, housing programs, and higher education. She is deeply committed to mentoring future social workers, fostering community partnerships, and creating opportunities for meaningful social change.

Outside of her professional and community service roles, Dr. Melton enjoys spending time with her family, supporting her daughters in their athletic pursuits, serving her community, and encouraging others to live with purpose, compassion, and resilience.
