About
Nicholas Carlisle, PhD, JD, has been selected as the incoming Chief Executive Officer of AIDS Alabama. A native of Alabama, Dr. Carlisle brings more than 20 years of experience working alongside people living with HIV and communities most impacted by the epidemic, both domestically and internationally.
Prior to joining AIDS Alabama, Dr. Carlisle served as Deputy Director of the Center for the Study of Sexual and Gender Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he conducted public health research focused on improving health outcomes for people living with HIV and communities most impacted by the epidemic. He previously served as Executive Director of the Southern AIDS Coalition, where he worked to strengthen the South’s response to HIV and advance health equity across the region. He also served as Executive Director of Thrive Alabama, served in the U.S. Peace Corps, and created Alabama’s first legal program for people with HIV.
Across his career, Dr. Carlisle has combined public health, law, advocacy, research, and nonprofit leadership to expand access to care, reduce stigma, and improve health outcomes for people living with HIV. His work reflects a deep commitment to community, dignity, and the belief that every person deserves access to compassionate, high-quality services and support.
