About

Shyla K. Fields is a strategic connector, collaborator, and program leader serving as

Director of the Health Across the Lifecourse (HEAL) Research Focus Area within the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Dean's Office. In this role, she cultivates and strengthens partnerships across academic departments, research centers, institutes, and community organizations to advance innovative research and improve health outcomes across the lifespan. Leveraging extensive experience in program development, stakeholder engagement, and strategic initiatives, facilitates collaboration among diverse partners to accelerate health equity, foster interdisciplinary research, and support HEAL's mission of advancing precision population health through a lifecourse approach.

Prior to her current role, Shyla advanced health equity and inclusive excellence initiatives at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where she developed and implemented educational programs focused on cultural awareness, community engagement, and equitable healthcare delivery. She also led HIV prevention, Linkage to care, and support initiatives, working closely with public health agencies, healthcare systems, academic partners, and community-based organizations. Through these collaborative efforts, she has built a reputation as a trusted leader and ally for advancing health advocacy, strengthening community partnerships, and fostering inclusive approaches to research, healthcare, and population health.

Outside of her professional responsibilities, Shyla's greatest priorities are her family, faith, and service to others. She is committed to cultivating meaningful relationships and leading with compassion, integrity, and purpose. These values shape her approach to leadership and collaboration, inspiring her work to build bridges across communities, strengthen partnerships, and create opportunities that positively impact individuals and families. She is passionate about leaving a legacy of service, connection, and empowerment in both her personal and professional endeavors.
